Specialized Equipment for use with Liquid Metals

Electromagnetic Pumps

Electromagnetic pumps (or EM pumps) are unique pumps for use with liquid metals at temperatures up to 1500°F. They have no moving parts and no seals and, therefore, are ideal for use with molten metals, including alkali metals such as NaK, sodium, and lithium.

Pump and flow-meter calibration is possible with CEI’s ready-to-run test stand or with a system custom-designed for a customer's unique requirements. NaK (sodium-potassium alloy) or sodium is commonly used, and other liquid metals are also possible.

High-Temperature Pressure Transmitters

CEI can supply a high-temperature chemical seal and capillary attached to a pressure transmitter, filled with NaK (sodium-potassium alloy), a form of liquid metal that stays liquid at normal temperatures. Process temperatures as high as 1500°F (815°C) can be accommodated, which far exceeds most standard capillary fill fluids. The process connection can vary by process need, with many choices of upper and lower housing, as well as diaphragm materials that include 316/316L stainless steel, Hastelloy C276, Duplex 2205, Inconel 600, and many more. Please download and complete the Application Data Sheet for NaK-filled transmitters and send to Creative Engineers, Inc. for review.

Liquid Metal Heat-Transfer Systems

Liquid metal heat-transfer systems have utilized alkali metals, primarily sodium and sodium-potassium (NaK) alloys, for many years. High-temperature furnaces, nuclear reactors, and other systems have all applied the benefits of non-volatile liquid with high-temperature capability and high thermal conductivity.

Typical Components

  • Fired or electric heaters

  • Process heat exchangers

  • Heat exchanger for heat sink

  • Pumps

  • Cold traps

  • Hot traps

  • Oxide-measuring systems

  • Tanks for storage and expansion

  • Inert cover gas systems

  • Thermal insulation

  • Heat-tracing/system preheaters

  • Control system

CEI can design or design/build a heat-transfer system using liquid metals for your project or equipment. Extensive experience with sodium, NaK (sodium-potassium alloy), and lithium makes CEI uniquely qualified to provide proven solutions.

Electromagnetic Flow Meters

Electromagnetic flow meters (or EM flow meters) are unique measurement devices for use with liquid metals at temperatures up to 1500°F. They have no moving parts and no seals and, therefore, are ideal for use with molten metals, including alkali metals such as NaK, sodium, and lithium.

Due to our extensive experience with liquid metal systems, CEI has the capability to test production-scale pumps, flow meters, and other components at temperatures up to 1200°F. The entire range of CEI’s pumps can be tested, as well as flow meters up to 3-inch-pipe size. Contact us to discuss all your liquid metal testing needs.

For small-scale pumps and flow meters like those CEI has developed for laboratories, a ready-to-run test stand is available for our customers.
